Not your normal
humanitarian group
Tembo Trading Company (TTC), is a social entrepreneurial business whose profits generate income to support our non-profit, Tembo Trading Education Project (TTEP).
We are not an organization that you see on the television. With the faces staring into the camera. Big round eyes filled with grief, flies buzzing around crusty nostrils. You hear the slogan, "Please help the starving children of Africa" and you pull out your wallet and donate funds to that organization thinking that your money will make a difference.
For over 45 years, humanitarian organizations and governments have been sending and spending billions of dollars every year to poverty stricken countries in the form of aid. While noble and important for dealing with immediate crisises and needs, it does not deal with solving the cause of the need. Where is the money going? How is it being spent? What are the measureable goals? What are the short and long terms plans? What is the exit strategy?
We have always been passionate about education but we began to see a new and broader vision, to use education as a tool to bring hope to young people who have none. Our mission is to develop hope and self-reliance through education and business.
As social entrepreneurs we see a social problem and use entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a venture to transform the status quo. A business entrepreneur sees success in profit and return. A social entrepreneur focuses on creating human capital and growth. |
